In April, 1980, the Tatman Foundation and University Southern California (USC) entered into an agreement to sponsor a Channel Islands Research Program (CIRP), with Dr. John M. Engle as project coordinator. The first phase would involve diving surveys off the eight islands, with emphasis on habitat descriptions and field identification of marine plants, invertebrates, and fishes.
Research was initially done aboard the vessel, "Cormorant", a former Army workboat built in 1952 that was purchased by Tatman in 1979 and converted for diving and oceanographic research. It was named after USS Cormorant (AMS 122MSC-122), a Bluebird Class Minesweeper launched in 1953 (reclassified as a Coastal Minesweeper in 1955). David Chomeau served in the United States Navy aboard Cormorant from 1958 to 1961.
In 1984 Tatman sold the original "Cormorant" and purchased a replacement vessel which they also named "Cormorant".

The Tatman Foundation was pleased to make a donation to Kingdom House in St. Louis in honor of our 50th anniversary.
Harriet Tatman was a great supporter of the Methodist Church and she had great admiration for a Methodist bishop, Ivan Lee Holt who was instrumental in supporting Kingdom House by coordinating the efforts of the many churches and church organizations under his jurisdiction, and raising funds from them for Kingdom House.
Also, one of the Gould's and Chomeau's best friends, Mrs. Merrydell May, endowed the Howard L. May Center, an infant care facility at Kingdom House.
Tatman is a proud supporter of the the Door County Maritime Museum's Maritime Lighthouse Tower Project.
